CHAPTER SEVEN

MAX

Itugged at the collar of my suit, scanning the chattering guests mingling around the cliffside ceremony site. Brittany had gone all out for the boho-chic theme, with billowy curtains, mismatched vintage chairs, and pops of bright wildflowers everywhere.

It would have been charming if I wasn’t preoccupied searching for potential threats. After the murder, we couldn’t be too careful around unfamiliar humans. I studied each face, looking for any signs one of these strangers could be linked to the hunters. Searching for that peculiar, empty scent.

The null, Willow had called it. Not her work, and both Jackson and I sniffed her and her home thoroughly to be sure. But one she knew of, and could explain for ‘fur-brained idiots at ungodly hours’.

My wolf snarled in my head.

Knowing someone could essentially erase themselves and leave behind emptiness as evidence didn’t let sleep come easy. Nor did the same answer from two other witches settled in our area.

I stuffed my hands in my pockets to keep from strangling the empty air in front of me.

I checked my watch again. Where was Cassidy? Brittany must have sent her on yet another last minute errand. I just hoped she would get here soon. The seats had almost filled up, the bridal party snarked at each other behind a copse a little way down the path, and steely-eyed Uncle Barrett checked his phone about every ten seconds.

After the craziness of yesterday, we hadn’t had a chance to talk. I’d face-planted into bed sometime around 3am and was dead to the world until late morning. By the time I woke up, Cassidy was already off helping Brittany prepare.

I missed her, I realized with a pang. Missed her smile, her laugh, her lively commentary. Just being near her made even unpleasant events enjoyable.

Mate.

Fuck, that kiss. I could still taste her on my tongue, smell her alluring scent, feel her body pressed up against mine. She tasted like heaven, her curves felt like sin, and I’d been hard ever since. My wolf agreed, growling away in my head like a damn chainsaw.

She knew about me. About the pack. I didn’t even know where to begin unraveling that tangle, or piece together when she’d caught on. Declan would lose his shit when he realized his usual morning server wasn’t just some dumb human with the wool pulled over her eyes.

Not that she was dumb. Or just a server at the diner. She was—

Cassidy.

My breath caught in my lungs at the first flash of golden hair in the evening light. Waves cascaded down her back, fluttering in the light breeze. She’d pinned one side away from her face, exposing the delicate curve of her neck.

The slim green dress she wore hugged her full breasts and then flowed down over her hips. The skirt swirled around her knees in the wind, giving teasing flashes of her toned calves. She looked beautiful, confident, sexy, and more than one male guest turned to give her a second, lingering look as she passed.

I’d kill them.
